Grout Or Caulk Around A Bathtub Or Shower?
Caulk should be used around areas that are directly exposed to water or moisture, especially around a bathtub or shower. Caulk is a watertight sealant typically made from latex, silicone, rubber, or a combination of these.
Because caulk is flexible in nature it can handle the movement of bathtubs that may cause grout to crack over time. The movement of tubs usually isn’t very noticeable but usually occurs with temperature change or regular use with the frequent filling and draining of water.
It is very common for grout to encourage mold growth because it is porous and takes a long time to dry. That isn’t the case with caulk! Grout is a mixture of cement, water, and sand, it is useful for filling gaps and reinforcing things like tile, but it isn’t a true sealant. Caulk provides a water-tight seal between gaps and can even be applied on top of grout.
Is Caulk Always Better Than Grout?
Not always. Caulk and grout both serve different purposes. When you need a water-tight seal caulk will be your best friend. However, when needing a strong material to fill and join things like tile and backsplash, grout should be used.
Where Else Should You Use Caulk In The Bathroom?
- Around Windows and Doors
- Along Baseboards
- Around Sinks and Countertops
- Around Bathtubs and Showers
- Around Plumbing Fixtures
- Between Tiles
- Anywhere Two Different Materials Meet
